News1st journalists threatened by protesters
PMA is deeply concerned to hear that a masked protest outside the headquarters of Sri Lankan broadcaster News1st in Colombo has resulted in the threatening and intimidation of journalists.
As reported by News1st, protesters were heard shouting “black media”, a reference to a derogatory remark made in parliament by the country’s Prime Minister and since echoed by others. However, at the time of writing it is unclear as to the affiliation of the protesters.
While the intimidation of journalists has been widely condemned by leaders across political parties, it is essential that the safety of journalists and freedom of the press is protected to ensure an informed and effective democracy.
